gouache/oils mish-mash. always loved the bridge of kazad dum showdown between the Balrog and gandalf-some of this i like, other bits not so keen. never tried painting flames before so some of them are less than convincing. it was fun nevertheless..
I remember when I painted this that I got a bit ahead of myself and painted loads of flames around the torso, before realising with horror that I could no longer realistically render any lower body or legs due to the silhouette I'd created. I then realised by happy accident that I could just leave it and have the Balrog "emerging" from the darkness as if it was some kind of spectre with no real physical form. Maybe not what Tolkein intended but thankfully it worked out and I actually prefer it this way. Glad you like it, thanks!!
If you like epic battles like this read The silmarillion particularly the ruin of beleriand. Their is a battle between the combined forces of men elves & numenor against Morgoth who sends forth a mass of flame including a king of dragons and a host of balrogs.
